Is There Free Money I Can Get Today?
There is genuinely free money in the United States, but almost none of it arrives today, and the things advertised as instant are usually the ones that are not real. Here is the sorted version.
Real and possibly same-day
Unclaimed property you already own, emergency assistance through 211, and hardship funds held by utilities and non-profit hospitals. These are free, they are not loans, and the reason people miss them is that they are almost never advertised.
Real but slower
Bank and brokerage sign-up bonuses pay real cash on legally binding terms, though they require a deposit condition and time to clear. Tax credits you did not claim can be recovered by amending a return. Both are worth more than anything on this site and neither is instant.
Real but a matter of chance
Sweepstakes prizes are free money in the literal sense: no purchase necessary is a legal requirement in the US. They are also decided by a draw, so they are worth entering and not worth counting on.
Not real
Gift card generators, unused code lists, and any message telling you a payment is waiting once you cover a small fee. Retailer card numbers are validated against the issuer database, so a code nobody bought does not exist.
